Dear Subscriber,

Welcome to our March edition of "Computer & Printer Tips".

I hope things are going well for you. It's a tough time right now for a lot of people, so I hope you're hanging tough.

It seems that tax time is just around the corner again. Ugh... Just what we need... More work that we didn't ask for.

Sometimes I think... Wouldn't it be nice if the government did my taxes for me? If they want my money so bad, then let THEM do the work involved in preparing my tax return.

But, then I come back to reality and realize that I wouldn't want them poking into my affairs anymore than they aready do anyway. So, I guess I just have to bite the bullet and do the work myself (with the help of an accountant).

On a brighter note, bext month's newsletter will have a nice discount coupon included in it. That should help take a little of the sting out writing your tax check next month. (For those of you like me who won't get a refund.)

We generally like to have one of our coupons right after tax time, so keep an eye out for next months issue.

But that's next month...

This month, Bob has written a great article regarding portable printers. If you've ever considered getting a portable printer, this is a must read. If not, there are still some good nuggets of knowledge you can pickup.

So with that said, onto our feature article...

===============================================================
FEATURE ARTICLE: Do you need a Portable Printer?
===============================================================

A "portable" printer does not just mean "easily moved". It means that the printer can travel with you and be used in a variety of locations away from your home or office computer. This gives you the ability to work virtually anywhere.

Printers with the "portable" name are typically very compact and lightweight, and come in a variety of styles and options depending on the intended use.

If you need a printer for use in places that typically don't offer printer access, then you may be a legitimate candidate for a portable printer.

Here are a couple things to keep in mind.

First, don't buy a portable printer simply because you need a printer to use in 2 different locations, such as an office and your home. It is almost always more cost effective to buy an additional desktop printer (assuming a computer was available too).

Second, portable photo printers are not as feature packed as standard photo printers. These can sometimes only produce 4 x 6 photos or smaller (which may not be appropriate for a graphic- rich proposal in a customer's home). Portable printers can be Inkjet, Dot Matrix, Thermal, or Dye sublimation and are ideally suited for producing photos on demand (usually in a location with an power outlet).

Here are some popular models currently available on the market that are appropriate for scrapbooking, family gatherings, etc. (print 4 x 6 photos).
  • Epson Picturemate series printer (T5570 cartridge) - BEST VALUE -
  • HP Photosmart A series printers(HP 110 cartridge)
  • Canon Pixma mini320 Compact Photo Inkjet Printer (CLI-36)
  • Canon SELPHY CP760 Compact Photo Printer (Sublimation)
  • Sony DPP-FP30 Digital Photo Printer (Sublimation)
If legal documents, images, or photos need to be printed away from the power outlet there are some models that use rechargeable batteries. The price of these machines can be a bit more costly.

Portable printers that produce 8-1/2" x 11" printed material usually pack a lot of options into a small space. Some of these printers allow you to print wirelessly from a PC, PDA, or camera phones via the "IrDA interface" or by using a Bluetooth adapter. Most come with a car adapter and rechargeable battery kit so the printer can be used anywhere with quality results.

Here are some options for this class of printers.
  • HP H470 Office Jet Mobile Printer (HP 94 HP 95 or HP 98)
    - BEST FOR MOBILE TEXT PRINTING
  • HP Deskjet 460c Mobile Printer
    - (Uses HP 94 HP 95 or HP 97, HP 99, HP 100 cartridges)
  • Canon PIXMA iP90v Photo Inkjet Printer
    - (Uses BCI-15, BCI-16 cartridges)
  • Canon BJC-85 Portable Color Bubble Jet Printer
    - (Uses BCI-10 & BCI-11 cartridges)
  • Canon iP100 Mobile Photo Printer
    - (Uses PGI-35, CLI-36 cartridges)
  • SiPix Pocket Printer (direct thermal printing black only)
    - (Uses heat sensitive paper rather than ink or toner)
*** FYI: Our research shows poor customer rating ***
A few of these printers can actually be mounted in you car with a special printer holder system that closely resembles your TV wall mount. For those of you who do a lot of work in your car, this could be very appealing.

One final note… Just remember not to leave your mobile printers in your car or any other environments with high or low temperature extremes. The extremes may affect the print quality of your documents or the life of your printer.

Ok, that's all for March.

On a more personal note, I want to encourage you to keep up the fight.

I think we can all agree that these are tough times right now, but keep the faith and look forward to the future.

Times may continue to get tougher, but be wise, be mindful with your money, and help your neighbor when you can. This too will pass eventually.

The future may not be like the past, but we'll all figure out a way to make it and things will go on.

Until next time...
